IWE (Integrated Writing Environment)
A markdown workspace with a built-in PTY terminal and Git panel, packaged as a lightweight desktop app for people who write. MIT licensed.
Writers who work in markdown end up juggling three tools: an editor for the text, a terminal for build scripts and AI CLIs, and a Git client for versioning. IWE puts all three in one window so you never leave the editor to commit or run something.
Features
- Markdown editor with split-pane live preview, syntax highlighting and accurate workspace word counts.
- Interactive PTY terminal powered by Rust and xterm.js.
vim, nano, Python REPLs and AI CLIs all work as they would in a real terminal. - Git panel with auto-commit on save and GitHub sync, including automatic upstream branch handling.
- Safe file management for deeply nested files and folders.
- Three themes: Soft Slate (VS Code-style), True Terminal (green on black), Warm Ink (for reading).
- Command palette, quick file switcher, and the keyboard shortcuts you would expect (
⌘P,⌘⇧P,⌘`,⌘⇧G).
Why Tauri
Electron would have been the obvious choice. Tauri gives a native webview and a Rust backend, which keeps the binary small and makes the PTY layer a first-class part of the app rather than a Node child-process shim. The trade-off is a harder build setup (libwebkit2gtk on Linux, rustup everywhere), which the install.sh script papers over for Linux users.
